Wow, been really abandoning this blog, and it's no fault of mine *cough*. I would have blogged earlier, had my brother not used up ALL the bandwidth and left us capped at an appalling internet speed that refused to load anything. It's that kind of hair-tearing, wall-pounding annoyance one gets when the internet goes from fast to super slow. It's really quite amazing HOW he could get us capped, considering the fact that he was in Hong Kong for a whole week, and during that one week, I only used it to surf text webpages and check mail... (and my restaurant).
Enough complaining. I did warn him that if he gets any part of this month capped, he's in trouble =_= especially since uni starts for me. Grrr...

Chinese new year has come and gone, so has Valentine's Day, though that's never really anything special. Sure, there's the occassional tinge of envy from all those lovey dovey stories you hear from sweet couples, but me? I shrugged it off and... went to work on Feb 14 this year. Yep, on the Sunday of Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day, I was working. Doesn't mean I don't get red packets though =P I got extra red packets this year because my siblings went off to HK and I was left out~ haha. Oh! See the tiger paw? =D Won it~
From Week 7, 2010 |
My mum was left behind too, but she's going to Japan AND Hong Kong soon, so it's not counted. She did invite some friends over for lunch one day though, and requested me to make something for them. I made... rice =D
From Week 7, 2010 |
Of course, I wasn't going to make them just eat plain rice, but at least I can cook rice! =D
From Week 7, 2010 |
This plain looking onigiri has hidden pork floss within. Made some with furikake as well, for variety.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Onigiri has underwear on.
Verdict? I thought I went a little overboard with the rice vinegar mixture, but the aunties liked it and thought it was just right. They were surprised with the pork floss (wow, they really thought I'd feed them plain rice, albeit in the shape of a triangle) and decided I was too stingy with it, so they helped themselves to my can of pork floss... but I swear I was generous with it already!! Well, tt liked it~ that's all that matters.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Had dinner at Istana with mum and tt. Sad to say, the standard has gone quite low since the last time we went, which was quite a long time ago.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Mum was particular excited about trying their satay, but it was a disappointment- definitely nothing in comparison to Singapore's satay from the streets, and the peanut sauce was stale...
From Week 7, 2010 |
If there's any dish at all that Isatana is fail-proof at, it's their sambal Kang Kong... it will always be my favourite dish there, despite its simplicity.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Since no one's been cooking at home, I decided to try this recipe at the back of the mushroom paper bag from Harris Farm. It's a cream of mushroom soup and looks pretty simple~
From Week 7, 2010 |
All you need is mushrooms, a whole lot of them, cut into small pieces (use scissors... who can be bothered with knives) and then add some butter, some water, and simmer till the shrooms are soft, which doesn't take very long at all.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Then you're supposed to blend it so it's all broken up into babyfood pulp, but I couldn't be bothered, plus I like mine chunky, not pulped, so I left out that step and just poured chicken stock in. To make it less watery, I put about 3tbsp of corn flour mixed with the hot chicken stock and mixed it in. It was still very watery though... hm...
From Week 7, 2010 |
Last step is to beat two egg yolks (I just chucked the whole egg in, why waste??) and some cream, and pour it in, mix, simmer on low heat and season with pepper... LOTS of pepper!! It turned out pretty nice, if I may say so myself~ even my mum had a bowl of it, and usually she doesn't like trying other people's cooking.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Thursday~ met tt for lunch at a Malaysian cafe called Kopitiam, 594 Harris St, Ultimo. We went slightly past lunchtime, so it was almost completely empty, but about 3 tables were filled.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Tt's nasi lemak. The rice was a crumbled pile and presentation was a little messed up because of it, but taste-wise... no complaint really, the chilli was hot, the ikan bilis were crisp and hot, the rendang... well, I didn't really have much of it, but at least no food poisoning symptoms after intake, so that's good =)
From Week 7, 2010 |
I ordered a bakuteh. This was very different from the one at Laksa House, Grace Hotel. IMO, different in a not so good kind of way, because it wasn't very herbally fragrant...
From Week 7, 2010 |
but they don't fail in meeting expectation in their teh tarik =D Yay for strong milk tea.
From Week 7, 2010 |
We then headed over to Norita Board Game Cafe for some games and dessert. Mars Bars Cheesecake! I've had this once or twice now. First time was with my brother at some Italian restaurant out in woopwoopland (I forgot where it was) and it was -so- nice~ can't get enough of this sinfully sweet cheesecake.
We wanted to play Chinese stick game, but the guy working there had no idea what it was ._.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Friday saw us at Takeru, a place we used to go to till we got sick of it. Haven't been back there in ages~ I like that place for its 1/2 size dishes. It's like, finally, we have a restaurant that caters to people who don't eat a whole horse for a meal and prefer smaller dishes. I'm sure the ladies out there appreciate it, because I know I feel guilty if I leave stuff on the plate (Asians!! Don't waste food! Must eat every single grain of rice, right?) but sometimes, when you're full, you just can't finish it. 1/2 sizes fix that issue, so here is my 1/2 size shouyu ramen~
From Week 7, 2010 |
tt's full size tonkatsu dish doesn't look that much bigger than my 1/2 size actually.Rip off.
From Week 7, 2010 |
Their tofu and soft shell crab salad!!! I'm sure I've mentioned the bliss of eating a full crab, with all its meat and yellow "mustard" and... all!! No mess and no waste too, just eat the whole thing~
From Week 7, 2010 |
What an artistic shot =D This was the Chinese Stick Game. The same guy was working, but he must have asked someone what it was, because he brought it for us this time.
Getting late, I'll try to update tomorrow night to get things back up to date... I just read YW's blog, she's been updating already! =D Yayyy~ congrats on your wedding YW!! =)
Things to look forward to for the next entry? Unfortunately, not many good reviews for food, because the next one coming up is an overpriced plus mediocre restaurant at Leichhardt. What, $7.50 for a bottle of water? =(

$7.50 for the bottle of water - but at least at the end of it the bottle was your loot =P
Mikado?
ohh... is that what it's called, officially? haha, it was just called the chinese stick game in the menu at the board game cafe.
I don't know where that $7.50 bottle went ._. it's missing... and I have a feeling my mum chucked it =_=
